Mechanicsburg
Sportsmen’s Association has National Rifle Association certified
instructors for pistol, rifle, shotgun, personal protection, home firearm
safety, and ammunition reloading. New classes include the four-hour NRA First Steps program, which
provides training on one specific firearm (either yours or ours) and one
hour of practical range time. A
student manual, safety brochures, and NRA certificate of completion are
provided at both orientation and basic classes.
Discounts are available to youth for most classes.

Course
Length: 3 to 4 hours.
This
is an NRA First Steps Pistol Course.
The following is included in the course instruction:
·
Pistol
safety, parts and operation.
·
Ammunition
and fundamentals of handgun shooting.
·
One
hour of live shooting on the firing range.
·
Cleaning
and storage of handguns.
Class
includes Basics of Pistol Shooting Handbook, brochures, .22 caliber
ammunition, targets, and an NRA Course Completion Certificate.
Guns, safety glasses, and hearing protection are provided for use
in class.
The class can be conducted using your firearm or ours.
This is an excellent course for owners of a new handgun or
individuals considering the purchase of a handgun.
The class is also popular with shooters who desire a refresher
class as well as people with limited time who want to focus on one
specific handgun.

This
is the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course.
The course instruction includes the following:

Pistol
knowledge and safety
·
Ammunition
knowledge and fundamentals of handgun shooting.

Approximately
3 hours of practical range time to develop skills.
·
Selecting
a handgun.
·
Cleaning
and storage of handguns.
This course is more extensive than the First Steps class and covers a variety of handguns. The class includes a Handbook and NRA Course Completion Certificate.

is the NRA First Steps Rifle Course.
The following is included in the course instruction:

Rifle
safety, parts and operation.

and fundamentals of rifle shooting.
·

and storage of guns.
Class
includes Basics of Rifle Shooting Handbook, brochures, .22 caliber
ammunition, targets, and an NRA Course Completion Certificate.
Rifles, safety glasses, and hearing protection are provided for use
in class.
The class can be conducted using your firearm or ours. Winter classes are usually conducted with .22 rifles. Special summer classes may feature other rifles, such as World War II era M1 Carbines.

Length: 14 hours.
This
is the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course.
The course instruction includes the following:

Rifle
knowledge and safety
·
Ammunition
knowledge and fundamentals of rifle shooting.
·
Shooting
from the standing, prone, sitting, and kneeling positions.
·
Cleaning
and storage of rifles.
This class is usually scheduled on a request basis. Training can be provided in either the small bore (.22) or high power (M1 Carbine or AR-15 type) rifle disciplines. Instruction can also be provided using BB guns or match quality air rifles. The class includes a Handbook and NRA Course Completion Certificate.

Course

This
is the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course.
The following is included in the course instruction:

Rules
for Safe Gun Handling
·
Identifying
and unloading different firearms. Parts
and types of guns. Includes
revolver and semi-automatic pistols, bolt action, pump, lever, and
semi-automatic rifles, and pump, semi-automatic, and hinge action
shotguns.
·
Students
practice safe handling and unloading with a variety of firearms.
·
Types
of ammunition, how it works, how to clean firearms and how to store
firearms and ammunition.
Class
includes Home Firearm Safety Handbook, brochures, and Certificate of
Completion.
This course does not involve shooting. It provides an opportunity to see and handle a variety of firearms, learn to operate, unload, clean, and store guns, and to become proficient in gun safety. This is an excellent course for individuals or families considering the purchase of a gun or for anyone interested in gun safety.

Course
length: 8 hours.
This
is the NRA Basic Personal Protection Course.
The class is a beginning level personal protection course which
addresses defense within the home and provides information on the
law-abiding citizen’s right to self defense.
The course is intended for experienced shooters. Completion
of the Basic Pistol Certification is the recommended prerequisite for the
class. The following is
included in the course instruction:
·
Introduction
to defensive shooting.
·
Basic
defensive handgun skills, including two hours of range time to practice a
variety of basic defensive shooting techniques.
·
Firearms
and the law, which is presented by a guest speaker who is either an
attorney or a police officer.
·
Strategies
for home safety and responding to confrontations.
Students
will need to bring a firearm and approximately 100 rounds of ammunition to
complete the course of fire. Participants
will receive an NRA Certificate of Completion, the NRA Guide to the Basics
of Personal Protection in the Home, and a variety of brochures.

Reloading-Rifle
& Pistol Cartridges
Course
length: 10 hours.
This
is the NRA Basic Reloading Course (Metallic Cartridge).
The following is included in the course instruction:

Reloading
safety.
·
Knowledge
of center fire cartridge components
·
Selecting
and setting up reloading equipment.
·
Using
reloading data and manuals.
·
The
reloading process.
·
An
opportunity to practice reloading pistol and rifle cartridges.
Class
includes the NRA Guide to Reloading, NRA Certificate of Completion, many
brochures and handouts. All
necessary equipment and supplies are provided for use in the class.
This course in intended for individuals who wish to begin reloading
ammunition for their own use.

is the NRA-NMLRA Basic muzzle loading Pistol Shooting Course.
The course instruction includes the following:

Pistol
knowledge and safety.
·
Black
powder and loading the pistol.
·
Firing
and cleaning muzzle loading pistols.

Shooting
from the standing position.
·
Diagnosing
failure to fire.
This
course is usually scheduled on a request basis.
The class covers revolvers and single shot pistols (both flintlock
and percussion types). The
class includes a Handbook and NRA Course Completion Certificate.

is the NRA-NMLRA Basic Muzzle loading Rifle Shooting Course.
The course instruction includes the following:

from standing and crossed-sticks positions.
This class is usually scheduled on a request basis. The class covers both flintlock and percussion type rifles. The class includes the NRA muzzle loading Rifle Handbook and NRA Course Completion Certificate.

woman's-only instructional clinic includes the NRA Home Firearm Safety
Course and the NRA First Steps Pistol Course.
The course instruction includes the following topics:

Learn about a variety of guns, how to identify if they are loaded, and how
to safely handle and unload them with confidence..

Lots of hands-on activities.
· Pistol safety, parts and operation.
· Ammunition and fundamentals of handgun shooting.

Cleaning
and safe storage of handguns.

Cost
includes loaner guns, ammunition, targets, lunch, and two NRA Handbooks.
Participants will receive an NRA First Steps Certificate and the NRA Home
Firearms Safety Certificate for successful completion of the classes.
Safety glasses and hearing protection are provided for use
in class.
